An applicant may waive the exams under the Business and Professions Code Section 7065.1 but eligibility is reserved for specific circumstances.

Immediate family member of sole owner licensee

An immediate family member may be eligible for a waiver of the examination in the event of the retirement, illness or death of the sole owner licensee. The applicant has to have been employed by the family business for at least five (5) of the past seven years and the license was kept active in good standing for the same amount of time.

Officer of a Corporation / Member or Manager of an LLC

An officer / member / manager engaged in the business may be eligible for the waiver of the exam and replace the existing RMO/RME. This would be good to consider so you have a qualified officer / member / manager as a back-up in the event that a current qualifying individual retires from the corporation or LLC. The applicant has to have been a listed personnel on the license for at least five (5) of the past seven years and the license was kept active in good standing for the same amount of time.

 

 

Employee of a Corporation or LLC

Similar to a listed officer / manager / member, a key employee who has been on payroll may be eligible for the waiver of the exam. They may also acquire a separate license number for the purposes of developing a separate division so the original parent company can subcontract the work instead of maintaining payroll. The applicant has to have been employed by the company for at least five (5) of the past seven years and the license was kept active in good standing for the same amount of time.


General Partner

A listed general partner may be eligible for the waiver of exams and obtain a separate license number. the applicant has to have been a listed general partner on the license for at least five (5) of the past seven years and the license was kept active in good standing for the same amount of time.

 

Additional Classifications (B&P Code §7065.3)

Upon a conclusive showing, a licensed contractor may apply for an additional C classification without further examination under all of the following conditions:

1)      For five (5) of the past seven years immediately preceding the application, the applicant has been the qualifying individual actively engaged in the company’s construction activities.

2)      The applicant has no less than four (4) years of experience in the additional classification being applied for.

3)      The additional classification is determined by the Contractors Board as a significant component of the existing classification in which the applicant is licensed
